Parent Tech Checks
One of selfctrl’s primary services is to parents and helping educate them to lead effectively in their homes when it comes to tech use. Our non-profit provides free tech check Google Meet calls with one of our selfctrl coaches. The goal of a parent tech check is to listen to your needs and the current state of tech in your house. We help answer questions and give recommendations. Our stance towards tech is not all or nothing, or that all tech is bad. We focus on identifying when tech use becomes an idol and a distraction instead of a tool for doing good.
Our coaches are not therapists or counselors, although we may refer you to one. They are vetted volunteers or selfctrl staff who are all parents themselves, familiar with today’s tech (many with tech/IT backgrounds), and are wholly committed to helping you feel confident managing devices in your home. We are a Christian charity, and all coaches are believers in Jesus Christ, but we offer our services to anyone and everyone.
Recommendations are totally specific to each situation and may range from help setting up routers or parental apps on phones or video game consoles, to help finding professional or faith-based resources in your area, or simply answering questions you may have about what age should you give your child a cell phone or what you can do practically in your home to help lessen fights over screen time. We’ve also helped with extreme cases involving clear video game or phone addiction and while we don’t offer any professional or medical advice, we can help you come up with your own action plan as parents to help your child in those cases.
If you do want ongoing support to help keep you on track, we offer ongoing coaching after the first tech check at a subsidized rate of $45/hour. All proceeds go to our non-profit to advance the mission of helping families and individuals redeem their time from tech for doing good instead!
Individual Coaching Calls
selfctrl’s mission is to help people redeem their time from tech and do good instead. If you are sick of scrolling on your phone or playing video games more than you want, but haven’t been able to limit yourself, we can help! Our founder was addicted to video games (and arguably social media and news apps as well) and is committed to helping people break away from their reliance on tech and figure out how to have a healthy relationship with the devices that they use. We’ve helped teens, young professionals, adults with families of their own, and even senior citizens. Anyone is welcome to reach out!

Recommendations are totally specific to each situation and may range from setting strict limits like effective device bed times, quitting a problem app or game entirely for a time period, encouraging you to find an accountability partner, or even help finding professional or faith-based resources in your area. We’ve helped many people break free of tech use including apps or games that they just keep reinstalling and coming back to.
